The Moulin des Châteaux was first mentioned by name in a census of 1698. However it is believed to be one of the two mills to be given to Hugues, Bishop of Avranches by Robert the Magnificent, Duke of Normandy after his pilgrimage to the area in the 10th century. Note: this was a couple of hundred years before King Henry II had to do public penance in Avranches for ‘ridding himself of his troublesome priest’ - the Archbishop of Canterbury - Thomas Becket!
The Moulin des Châteaux is situated, with its close-by Petite Maison du Meunier (miller’s cottage), on the river Saultbesnon near Avranches in southern Normandy. As its name indicates, the mill used to grind flour for the local châteaux.
These are the only two dwellings in our own enchanting secluded valley. We are an English couple who retired here five years ago after thirty years in business. We live in the mill and we finished the renovation of the cottage ready for our first holiday guests in April 2005.
